Why do they wear such whimsical costumes and speak in seeming nonsense? Do they really protect the children from the foreboding evil of Komar Romak?

I hadn't read the first book, but it wasn't a big deal, an d I caught on pretty quick. (I am now going back and reading the first one though) This book takes place in 1903 in an old village in Italy. The young children (ages 6 to 13) are involved in a mystery not only to figure out why they had been taken in the first book, but it is a lot more than that. Of course they are i involved with perhaps an evil villain. I liked the book because I was impressed by these young scientists. They are brilliant, yet in quite a mess to figure out. This book does have a bit of fantasy in it, but it does have some science in it as well, which is pretty neat to read about.
