Brave Irene Childrens Book and CD set Review and Giveaway

Have you read the story of Brave Irene by William Steig?  It was New York Times Book Review's Best Illustrated Book of the Year back in 1986. I was quite little back then, but I don't think I remember having the book read to me.  Well, now the book has been released with an audio cd voiced by Meryl Streep.  So if you haven't read the story, or want to read it again, you should pick up this package.

  My boys are a bit too young to read the book by themselves, although they are good readers.  I would normally have read it to them, but since we had the audio version we were excited to hear it. It was like having an actual storyteller right here in our living room.  

My son's school is big on oral reading, and audio versions are another perfect way to help improve your child's oral reading skills.  Sound strange?  How can listening to a story improve oral reading, you ask?  When you listen to Meryl Streep read the story she really tells the story. No boring hum ho reading here.  Hearing the words thoosh and thwump coming from her, make you feel the thooshing and thwumping!!  Your kids can hear how they should be reading a story, how they should be feeling the story. I pride myself on reading to my boys and I feel like I am a good oral reader, but now and again I think an audio book can be so much fun, plus I held up the book and we followed along as if I was reading.

So, what's this Brave Irene about?

Brave Irene is Irene Bobbin, the dressmaker's daughter. Her mother, Mrs. Bobbin, isn't feeling so well and can't possibly deliver the beautiful ball gown she's made for the duchess to wear that very evening. So plucky Irene volunteers to get the gown to the palace on time, in spite of the fierce snowstorm that's brewing-- quite an errand for a little girl.

But where there's a will, there's a way, as Irene proves in the danger-fraught adventure that follows. She must defy the wiles of the wicked wind, her most formidable opponent, and overcome many obstacles before she completes her mission. Surely, this winning heroine will inspire every child to cheer her on.

I am telling you that this girl is not only brave but determined.  She has one problem after another, but she keeps going.  This is definately a story showing a never give up attitude!!!
