The Gruffalo's Child is the delightful sequel to the Academy Award-nominated short, The Gruffalo, based on the beloved children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This story, narrated by an
all-star cast, is sure to be a family favorite!
In The Gruffalo's Child, the Gruffalo
tells his child an extraordinary story of “The Big Bad Mouse,” warning
her never to go in the woods alone because there is a terrible creature
lurking there. Waiting until her father
falls asleep, the Gruffalo’s Child sneaks out
into the deep dark woods to see The Big Bad Mouse for herself. Along
the way she runs into a snake, an owl, and a fox and discovers that
while they have similar features to The Big Bad Mouse, they are, in
fact,
not him. Just as she is about to give up her search, she stumbles upon
a tiny mouse. Cautious of her, the mouse listens to what the Gruffalo’s Child is looking for, and then decides to reveal his big bad secret!
My children and I absolutely loved The Gruffalo, and the sequel is just as cute. The whole story is written in rhyming, which always makes a great read to the boys. As it says above, the little girl Gruffalo child encounters a snake, an owl, and a fox. If you have read the first story, you will remember these three. When I read this story to my boys, I would read about the clues that were telling us about the animal. When the story wondered if this was the mouse, my boys would yell, NO, it is a snake, or whichever animal it was. My six year old was never fooled, but at first my four year old was convinced it was the mouse. Of course, he changed his mind when his brother told him what animal it was. As you know, I love reading to the boys, and I love having them interact during a story. This book did give them the opportunity to do that. After we were done reading, my littlest sat on the bed and tried to recite the pages back to his brother!! We then watched the DVD, which of course was just as great as the first. The voices kept the boys watching and they loved seeing the characters on the tv that they had just been able to look at in the book!
